7 Reasons You Will Love Our Faculty

Faculty organize monthly, one-hour Talking About Teaching (TAT) sessions during which they discuss a predetermined topic voted on by all teachers. Past TAT topics include: Promoting Academic Integrity, Educating Gen Z, Redirecting the Obsession with Grades Back to Learning, and Supporting Our Transgender Community.

Many of our faculty members start their classes with five minutes of mindful meditation to center students.

When not coaching a sport, every faculty member stays after school for a full hour to make themselves available to students who need extra help.

One of our Math teachers has his students write and mail a thank you note to a person of their choosing each month, just because it’s good to be grateful.

Our Media Specialist is also a master maker with oodles of experience presenting and authoring books about makerspaces and creative education.

When we moved to an iPad 1:1 school in 2013, 88% of our faculty did the work to become Apple Certified teachers so they could best serve their students.

Our AP Calculus teacher literally wrote the book on AP Calculus BC.

My students are the spark and energy that fuel my passion for Art and teaching. Being in the studio, where I get to share my enthusiasm for creating with them, is priceless. I want my students to be empowered, happy, inquisitive, innovative and excited to design and fabricate in our workspace. I pride myself on helping my students to become strong problem solvers. I encourage them to be curious and to work for a solution, not settling for a quick fix.

My students allow me to be their sponge, absorbing all they have to share, making me a more tenacious artist and educator. I, in turn, share everything I know, and at the end of the day I have more than I started with, thus creating a symbiotic relationship in a creative and dynamic realm. I am a “maker” and always have been.

I hold two degrees in Art. My most recent degree in Metals and Jewelry from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) allowed me to return to the studio as a student for the first time in almost 25 years. What I learned about myself being an Art student again was an immeasurable asset for me to return to the classroom. I also worked for SCAD as a Career Adviser, which gives me an immense understanding of Art careers and what the industry looks for in budding designers. All these experiences allow me to guide, bestow and advise students who are interested in studying Art or pursuing it as a career.

I have worked in education for over 20 years getting my start in a small college near Orlando. I am a lifelong learner and seem to always be in the classroom either teaching or taking a class. Over the years, I have held many positions, but I have found that Human Resources is the position I enjoy the most. After a visit to Tampa Prep’s campus, it wasn’t a difficult decision to work here. We love our faculty and staff and I am proud to be Tampa Prep’s Director of Human Resources!

After teaching public high school for seven years, I decided to take on a new challenge middle school. My passion is reading! I love being transported to new places, learning about life experiences I otherwise would not be able to experience and making connections to the world around me. I love sharing that passion with others, which is why I decided on teaching as a profession. I have taught at both the high school (9th, 11th, and 12th grade English and AP English) and middle school levels (6th and 7th grade). I have enjoyed all ages, and I have learned many things from my students. Teaching at Tampa Prep allows me to create meaningful learning experiences. My careful planning and integrated curriculum allows students to create their own learning through content, while incorporating important life skills.

Outside of teaching, my main focus is my family. I really enjoy raising my two amazing daughters, who have opened up a whole new perspective for me when it comes to teaching. I also enjoy traveling with my immediate and extended family, teaching my children about the world, reading a good book ie especially if it involves a love story, capturing memories through words and photographs and trying out new recipes.

Aside from travel writers and professional surfers, I honestly think I have the best job in the world. My work each day is to read great literature and discuss it with some of the brightest and most creative young people in Florida. My job is to ask these young people to read and think carefully, to ask and answer big questions, to challenge their own ideas and beliefs and to form a more complex and adequate understanding of our world. For someone like myself, who has loved books and ideas from an early age, my work doesn’t really feel like artwork.” It feels like fun. There is, of course, the genuinely hard work of helping students to become better writers, but I take pleasure in this as well, because it is truly rewarding to see young people improve their ability to organize and express their ideas. As you might expect, I love poetry, and my favorite novels are Things Fall Apart, The Stranger, A Passage to India, Catcher in the Rye and Grendel. As for my educational background, I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Harvard University and an Master of Art degree in Philosophy from the New School in New York City. In addition to teaching 10th and 11th grade English, I am the head coach of the Debate team and the assistant coach of the Boys Varsity Soccer team. In what free time I have, I read, write, tweet, play and watch soccer, go for runs along Bayshore and sun-worship at Sunset Beach.

Prior to starting my teaching career, I was a co-owner of a small locksmith business in Asheville, North Carolina. I completed my Bachelor of Science degree in Physics in 2006, and worked towards my Master of Art degree in Teaching that included graduate coursework and research in physics. I began teaching for the Hillsborough County Public School System in August 2010, and earned my first Masters in May 2011. During the three years teaching at the county, I also taught Physics II to pre-med students at Hillsborough County Community College as an adjunct professor. In August 2013, I began teaching Physics and Advanced Calculus with Vector Analysis at Tampa Preparatory School.In May 2016, I earned a second Masters degree in Instructional Design and Technology (ID&T). I have applied some of the techniques learned within the ID&T program to convert the physics course from a traditional learning environment to a blended learning environment. The course is delivered 25% online and 75% face-to-face. Lectures are delivered online though a learning management system (LMS)prior to face-to- face meetings. Motivational design and backwards design are strategies I use to promote effective instruction. My course structures are designed to engage, motivate, and provide relevance for learners. Course content is designed with the end in mind to provide an organized, well-structured learning environment that will promote learner engagement and meet learning objectives.

I knew I wanted to become a teacher in 2001 when I was living in France working as an English assistant at a French high school. More importantly, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher that made learning a language a cultural experience and not a memorization chore. Since 2001, I have been teaching either in a school, home, center, community college or at a university in France, Portugal or the United States. Through all these experiences I have noticed a common thread: all students learn through risk taking and being engaged in what they are learning. It is with these principles in mind; cultural experiences, risk-taking opportunities and opportunity for engagement, that I create my lessons and conduct my classes. Moreover, I love working with students and I love my subject. I continue not only to perfect my Spanish, French and Portuguese, but to learn more languages and continue to gain perspectives into the student language learning experience.

I truly enjoy working with our talented, intelligent students at Tampa Prep. I believe I play an important role in my student’s journey to find their passion in life, and hope that I help inspire them to continue to make music a part of their lives for the rest of their lives.I have played the clarinet since the age of 12, and have performed chamber and orchestral music for many years, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Performance from the University of South Florida. After accepting a graduate teaching assistantship at the University of Nebraska, I chose to continue my music performance studies at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, where I earned certification in K-12 Instrumental Music. I taught Middle School Music in Chicago and was the Band and Strings Instructor at Perkins Elementary Magnet School for the Arts in Pinellas County. In 2008, I served as Manager of Music at Patel Conservatory, and in 2010, I taught Elementary Music for Hillsborough County Schools. I am co-founder of the 501c3 organization “Florida Musicians Educational Society,” and have been serving in the capacity of Executive Director since it’s inception in 2003. FloriMezzo Inc. is based on the philosophy that quality, live classical music will foster an enduring audience when community musicians with varied musical experience and backgrounds collaborate as educators, mentors and performers. In 2011, I embarked on FloriMezzo’s new initiative, the Tampa Metropolitan Youth Orchestra. Entering it’s fourth successful season, TMYO offers 200 students from more than 50 public, private and home schools the opportunity to perform in an advanced orchestral training program, which rehearses and performs at the USF School of Music.

All my early jobs paved the way to the career in the classroom that I have loved for over 20 years. My first job was to teach dance to would be ballerinas in pink tights and slippers, reveling in their adorably pointed toes and careful, curved arms. Later, at the YMCA, I coaxed shaking little fish from the side of the pool, to a death clasp around my neck, to finally, finally their first moments of independent swimming euphoria. I was a camp counselor and lifeguard, braiding hair, getting trounced at four-square by chits half my age, logging endless hours counting heads in the water. I loved every bit of it. It seems obvious then, that I would turn to teaching as a career; it felt as natural as breathing. In deciding to be an English Education major, I was allowed to read books all day: my idea of nirvana. Teaching literature allows me to teach practical skills, namely, how to read critically and how to write capably. Most importantly, though, literature allows students to consider other lives and other experiences, and in assessing characters’ choices, make some decisions on how to live their own lives. It is a great privilege that I am there to guide them through this process. My favorite part of being a teacher is much the same as those summer jobs of long ago: listening to individuals who are trying to navigate the tricky trek to adulthood, individuals who need to be heard. I know that far beyond the interpretative ending of Catcher in the Rye, my students will remember, I hope, that I cared for them, that I found much to admire in them, and that I listened.

I’ve loved nature all my life. When I was a child, I would go exploring through the woods around my house, searching for salamanders or listening for owls in the trees. As an adult, I have sought work that would keep me outdoors, serving as a park docent and working as a guide and educator at aquariums. I studied Marine Biology in graduate school, but I was already a scientist in kindergarten. I just didn’t know it yet. We live in the midst of many diverse and thriving ecosystems here in Florida. I consider them all to be my classroom! We are lucky to have the Hillsborough River right in Tampa Prep’s backyard that can be used as a focal point for scientific investigation. When students are here in the classroom or in the lab, they are using their own curiosity and the tools of scientific inquiry to solve mysteries in nature. I have been teaching for more than 25 years, working with younger children, teenagers and adults. These students will be our future scientists, politicians, business leaders and consumers. I hope that my love for science and the natural world helps students to make connections to the environment and to understand their impact on the world. It’s a privilege for me to work with the young scientists at Tampa Prep as we explore the natural world together.

School counseling has to be the best career in the world and it’s a wonderful blend of lots of things I love to do. My week includes teaching, counseling with individual students, meeting with small groups of students, talking to parents and teachers, crisis counseling, and strategizing long-range plans to meet the social/emotional needs of a diverse student body.Although I’ve worked in school counseling for 18 years, the past six years at Tampa Prep have been the most rewarding of my career. The Prep environment affirms individuality in students and faculty members, while also challenging growth, risk-taking, and intellectual and professional development. I thrive in the varied schedule and the freedom to be flexible in responding to student, teacher, and family needs as they arise usually unplanned! Each day is unique! In my spare time, I enjoy reading, crafting, and spending time with my husband, my three sons, and my beautiful granddaughter.

Mr. Conley is an award-winning music director, technical director and designer native to Tampa, FL, where his parents named him Alan, but only ever called him “Blake”. He currently serves as Technical Director for Tampa Prep, teaching classes in technical theater production and design. Mr Conley brings years of theater experience sparking productions to life and highlighting the artistry of student performers.

Mr. Conley holds a Bachelor of Arts in Music Education from Concordia College, Moorhead and a Masters of Music in Choral Conducting from the University of South Florida. When he is not working on musical endeavors he enjoys riding motorcycles and entertaining conspiracy theories.

I am constantly reminded of how grateful I am that I get to do some of my favorite things almost every day: art and running! Growing up I knew I wanted to work with children and somehow incorporate art, so when I saw that the University of Tampa offered a degree in Art Therapy I knew I found my dream degree.

I quickly took to the more educational side of Art Therapy, showing others new ways of seeing, exploring, and creating what is beautiful and interesting to them. Fortunately, I get to do this every day at Tampa Prep as I learn something new right along with the students in my classes.

My favorite moments are the “a-ha!” moments. Those moments after brainstorming together, when the student is able to understand or transfer what is in their mind onto the paper.

I also coach Middle School Cross Country and Track. The fulfillment I find from this is not just in sharing my love of running, but also in creating lifelong healthy habits.

I also advise an after-school club called Coloring the Community. CTC is a like-minded group of students who come together with a common goal of outreach and creativity. They have painted and made art lesson plans for both Graham Elementary and A Brighter Community for over 10 years. Read more about a recent Coloring the Community project.

I have been a Mathematics teacher at Tampa Prep since 1996. In my time here I have taught every Math class offered from sixth grade Math through Calculus. Although I had previously taught Middle School Math in South Carolina, I was originally hired as an Upper School teacher at Tampa Prep. While I truly enjoyed teaching the higher level Mathematics, I found that I missed the energy and excitement that comes from teaching Middle School students.My job as Athletic Director in the Middle School allows me to stay involved with my lifelong passion for sports and instill the positive values of teamwork and sportsmanship to all of the students here at Tampa Prep. I grew up playing multiple sports. I was a four-year starter for my high school baseball team and soccer team, earning All-Conference Awards in both sports. I also played basketball.I eventually decided to play soccer in college; however, I always enjoyed my third sport, basketball, the most. I had the least natural ability in that sport, so I had to work harder at it and did not make the Varsity team until my junior year. That hard work made me appreciate the improvement that I made and the successes I had so much more. I try to teach that to all of my kids, both students and players in everything that they do. Kristen originally pursued a career as a field researcher and was “pushed out of her comfort zone,” and began to work closely with students. She really began to enjoy the “ah-ha” moment student experienced and developed a great passion for working with students and began to pour herself into teaching as an adjunct professor at University of South Florida at St. Petersburg and tutoring as the Director of Math and Science for Disciplined Minds. Kristen relaxes through reading, gardening, and crafting and looks forward to sharing her ability to adjust when students needed and help them improve their understanding. Kristen received her Bachelor of Science in Marine Science-Biology from the University of Tampa, and her Master of Science in Environmental Science, Policy and Geography for the University of South Florida, St. Petersburg.

For someone who has absolutely no problem with speaking about our school and its community, that is second to none, I find myself struggling to write about myself. When I came to Tampa Prep in 1984 as a full-time English teacher and Varsity Basketball coach, I truly believed I would be on the fast track to a college coaching job, making a lucrative salary with a vacation home at the beach. Now I sit writing this bio having completed over 30 years at Tampa Preparatory School. What I didn’t expect was how much I was going to enjoy working at Tampa Prep. I can honestly say that there have been very few times over the years that I grumbled on my way to work. Grumbled after a loss, maybe, but never because of work.It is the people that make Tampa Prep special. It is the students, faculty, staff, security staff, custodians and maintenance people that make Tampa Prep great. It is almost a CHEERS type atmosphere, where everyone seems to know your name. It is the interaction of adults and students in the classroom, in the halls, at social events, at Arts evenings and athletic contests. It’s conversations at a lunch table or on a school bus on the way to a game. It’s the alums that come back in droves over the holidays to see both students and faculty, and then return to speak to our sophomores for Career Day and the seniors about what they should expect next as they venture on to their next challenge. It’s the way students rally around each other when there are setbacks in their lives. It is the sense of community that makes Tampa Prep special.I feel fortunate that my two children had the privilege to attend and graduate from Prep. I have been blessed to have an opportunity to go to a place every day where I feel I can make a difference. I feel the difference we make on a daily basis at Tampa Prep is one that will be understood and appreciated much more a few years down the line.

Dave comes to Tampa Prep via Jacksonville, the Caribbean, Japan, and Nepal, and fulfills a goal to return home to Tampa. Dave believes strongly in project-based learning, the value of innovative lesson plans and the inclusion of the Harkness method in his classroom. Dave is also a strong advocate for health and wellness activities. All of these are strong tenants of the Terrapin experience. We look forward to Dave’s trademark energy and enthusiasm for education, his love for travel and a desire for students to become the best version of themselves each day. Dave received his Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of South Florida and his Master of Arts in Teaching, Mathematics from the University of Tampa.

I joined the Tampa Prep family in 2015–immediately after moving to Tampa from Virginia as my husband had gotten a job teaching at Berkeley! Despite being part of a household divided (at least around Headmasters’ Challenge time!), I feel incredibly lucky to come to work every day at Tampa Prep. My background and graduate work is in creative writing, so I enjoy trying to bring different kinds of writing into the classroom. My goal every day is to help my students become better communicators and to encourage them to ask questions about the world around them and find their own voices and passions. I became a teacher because, once I had the chance to teach in graduate school, I couldn’t imagine doing anything else. Every day is different! And I love being surrounded by such curious and talented students and colleagues as those I’ve found at Tampa Prep. In my off hours, I love going to the beach with my family: husband Robert and our two small boys.

Julia has been a proud member of the Tampa Prep community, as a parent, since 2018 and is thrilled to join the Development Department as the Director of Marketing & Communications. Julia comes to Tampa Prep after serving as the Director of Marketing & Community Engagement for Boys & Girls Clubs of Tampa Bay and prior to that, she was the Director of Marketing & Promotions for Cox Media Group Tampa for 24 years, where she oversaw three top-ranked radio stations.

Julia graduated from the University of South Florida, where she met her husband, Brian. They and their two children (Samuel ‘25 and Amelia ‘27) love to travel (hiking in the Grand Canyon & Sedona and snow boarding in Park City, Utah were two favorite trips), love the Tampa Bay Lightning and love to have adventures. But most of all, they love their rescue dog Evie and their bunny Junie.

I’m excited to have relocated to Tampa and to begin my journey at Tampa Prep as the Academic Support Counselor! Prior to moving here, I spent the last twelve years working at North Broward Preparatory School in Coconut Creek, Florida, in different roles within the Lighthouse Point Academy. Most recently I was the Department Chair and learning specialist. I love working with all learners, and enjoy helping every student find their own personal success stories within each class! Before I started in education, I received my B.S. in Special Education from St. Cloud State University in Minnesota. After working for a few years, I received an M.S. degree in Reading from Barry University.

During the summer prior to my junior year in college, I decided to work in Washington, D.C. Every day I rode the metro to and from work. I knew that my summer job would add value to my education, however what I did not realize was that the metro ride would teach me an extremely important lesson in life. YOU BETTER ENJOY YOUR JOB! Nobody looked happy riding the metro. I thought about what I loved to do every day and the answer was simple: volleyball! I was extremely fortunate that my dedication to volleyball allowed me to earn a full scholarship to The College of William and Mary. I earned my Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology with a minor in Psychology. Upon graduating, I earned a graduate assistantship at Texas A&M University where I earned my Master of Science degree in Kinesiology (Sport Marketing and Management). The greatest opportunity at Texas A&M University was being able to volunteer my time with the volleyball team. This taught me another valuable lesson about pursuing a career in collegiate athletics, sometimes it’s not what you know, but who you know. Upon graduating I was offered a job to be the assistant volleyball coach at James Madison University, where I spent five years coaching and recruiting athletes from across the country. In 2008, I revisited that life lesson from the metro ride and decided that I wanted to become a teacher. I always enjoyed the mentoring aspect of coaching. I spent my first three years in Florida teaching Science and coaching volleyball at Plant City High School. In 2011, I was offered the opportunity to teach and coach at Tampa Preparatory School. I love my job! Every day I get the opportunity to impact the lives of students both academically and athletically. The excitement and energy in the Middle School is contagious. I teach them Science and they teach me the important things like the best iPad games, the meaning of a hashtag (which I tell them is the number sign) and the newest phrases. When I am not at school, I enjoy playing volleyball, going to the beach and traveling.

I attended the State University of New York at Cortland, where I was a member of the tennis team. During my time as a collegiate athlete, I was honored to receive the title of All-American. This accomplishment is one of my proudest moments as an athlete. I had earned my undergraduate degree in Psychology, but always knew that I wanted to pursue my Masters degree in Guidance and Counseling. I attend the College of New Rochelle and graduated with my masters in 2006. My career in education began, when I received a post-master’s internship at Florida State University. I worked in the Florida State University Athletic Academic office. As an athlete, I was so excited to work with a variety of sports. I thought my internship would be only nine months and I would return to New York to pursue my career, however it lead me to a new life in Florida. After working as an intern, I was hired as an Academic Advisor for the College of Education and College of Human Sciences at FSU. After two years, I was provided with an opportunity to move to Tampa. I spent a year at Plant City High School teaching Psychology, before receiving a Guidance Counselor position at Riverview High School.

Do you like Math? I have never asked a student this question. I am too afraid of the answer. During Open House, families look so uncomfortable when they realize they are sitting in a Math classroom. I don’t take it personally though. It was not my favorite subject in high school, but then I went to college and met a professor that changed everything. She was so much more than a Math teacher. She was a cheerleader, a motivator and a mentor who helped me develop my appreciation of Math. I discovered that I was actually quite good at Math and made it my minor in college. Education was my major because I wanted other students to appreciate it as much as I did, and decided that the best way for me to do that was to become a Math teacher. At Tampa Prep, I am given the latitude to reach students on their level by developing relationships rooted in respect, service and hard work. I truly want to develop the whole student. What kind of gift would math be if it was entrusted to someone that did not have a higher purpose than self? My students are respected and therefore show respect, they are motivated and therefore work hard each and every day, and most importantly they are grounded with a sense of community that drives them to be the best they can be. It is truly my honor to teach children and I am humbled to be entrusted as a part of their lives at such an important developmental stage.

I’ve taught students from middle school through graduate school. No matter the age or stage, my goals as an educator are to actively engage students and develop their critical and analytical thinking skills. My hope is that these skills will help to create independent thinkers who appreciate science and care for the world in which we live. Prior to teaching, I received my Bachelor of Science in Zoology from the University of Florida and my Ph.D. in Human Genetics from Tulane University. I conducted postdoctoral research in cell biology and completed a fellowship in clinical biochemical genetics at the National Human Genome Research Institute in Bethesda, Maryland. I enjoy bringing this real-world research experience into my teaching, especially in AP Biology and my two electives: Human Medical Disorders and Bioethics. When I’m not at school, I love traveling with my family and being outdoors: hiking, biking, kayaking, sailing, gardening, or just taking the dogs for a walk.

Many years ago I chose the profession of Education at the urging of my now deceased uncle. Throughout my childhood, I witnessed his influence on hundreds of young minds. After watching him for many years, I felt certain that teaching and coaching was intended as my future also. I started my career teaching in elementary schools in Indiana and Florida where I taught both grades four and five. I then had the great opportunity to come to Tampa Prep to continue my teaching in Middle School Mathematics. Since 2002, I have been able to call Room 1206 at Tampa Preparatory School my second home. Working next to some of the best educators and administrators in the business makes it a joy to come to work each day. Never a day goes by when a student does not put a smile on my face either by their joy in understanding a concept or just by the simple conversation of how his/her day is going. The Tampa Prep community has allowed me the opportunity to contribute to the lives of young students in what I consider a quaternary approach. In my view, element 1 is the most obvious: education. Element 2: personal growth and development. Element 3: development of the use of technology in my classroom, and finally Element 4: guidance toward self-actualization. It is the fourth element that ranks amongst my most valuable contributions. As students grow in the Tampa Prep classroom, it is my aspiration to steer each student toward an expression of creativity, pursuit of knowledge and a desire to give to society.

Tampa Prep has been my home since I moved to Tampa from Stuttgart, Germany, where I had lived since graduating from college. I went as an au pair for a year, and that single year turned into 15! I got married, had two children, taught English and German and earned my National Translator Certificate for German-English.I began my career at Prep teaching English and Spanish in both the Middle and Upper School. After several years of the split position, I moved entirely to the Foreign Language department teaching various levels of Spanish. I love sharing my passion for language with young people and I hope to influence their perspective of the world by helping them understand other cultures.Living in Europe also awakened my interest in environmental issues, and more than ten years ago, I found a bunch of like-minded students who helped me start the Environment Club. We have done everything from planting trees and participating in beach clean ups to helping get solar panels installed on the gym roof and starting a school garden! The Environment Club has most recently adopted the USF park on Ashley Drive to tend.When I started at Prep, I also joined the ranks of coaches and became a Middle School Swim coach. I coached the Middle School Swim program for 15 years and enjoyed teaching the skills for a lifelong sport and the discipline necessary to be on a swim team. For many years now, I have worked with several other faculty members on the Pisgah Leadership Team to plan and prepare the annual 11th grade backpacking trip to Pisgah National Forest. This trip is a graduation requirement and serves to give students the opportunity to grow in ways many had never considered.I’ve been at Tampa Prep since 2000. My husband Andrew (History teacher at Prep), and I have watched our three children learn at Prep, and I can’t think of a better place for our very different children to have as an alma mater.

The day that I stepped onto campus here at Tampa Prep I realized what family within the workplace meant. I have spent the last 11 years in collegiate athletics, and have worked with the highest level athletes possible, NBA, NFL you name it, but nothing has compared to the possibility of impact here at Tampa Prep. I have found that my passion is working with those that have the highest possibility of impact, and I love every second of it. I have a Masters of Arts in Kinesiology and Health Studies, with a specialization in Sports Administration and Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology, with a specialization in Exercise Science from Wayne State University. I also have a beautiful wife who is a nurse, and two dogs Tyson and Kali.

Andrew Hoy serves as Tampa Prep’s Choral Director leading four choirs and teaching AP Music Theory. He studied at University of South Florida where he earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Composition. He wrote a piece that was premiered by the Florida Orchestra in 2009. He also was the winner of the Help’s Festival Composition Contest in 2009. In 2011, Mr. Hoy graduated with his Master’s Degree in Choral Conducting, studying under James Bass, Duncan Couch, and Robert Summer. In that summer, he participated in the Professional Choral Institute with Seraphic Fire. The recording of the Brahm’s Requiem from that summer earned a Grammy nomination. Mr. Hoy has been on faculty at Tampa Prep since 2011. Chamber Chorus has been ranked “Superior” by the last 17 judges in various competitions. Upper School students have traveled to perform in Washington D.C and Carnegie Hall in NYC under his leadership.

Upon graduating from college with a bachelor’s degree in both Business and Government, I worked as a member of the Development office and as a dorm parent at The Fessenden School, a K-9 all-boys day and boarding school outside of Boston. It was the experience of working as part of the residential life staff that helped to define my career path and led me to pursue graduate studies in Counseling and Student Affairs Administration. After positions working in the student life offices at Cheshire Academy (CT), The Madeira School (VA) and Lawrence Academy (MA), I moved to Florida in the fall of 2006 to begin my work as the Dean of Students at Tampa Preparatory School.The ultimate goal for me professionally is to foster a dynamic and inclusive campus community that supports students’ personal, social and intellectual growth during the high school years. My role on campus can be described as being a cheerleader, listener, organizer, counselor, student advocate and disciplinarian. Adults play a huge part in the personal experiences students have at school. After growing up in Tampa, I moved north to earn a B.S. and an M.A. in Communication Sciences and Disorders and Learning Disabilities from Northwestern University. Previously I worked in Northwestern’s diagnostic and remediation clinics and taught students of all ages, focusing on intervention for students with learning differences, ADHD, and executive functioning challenges. Most recently I directed a department of learning and behavioral specialists at Bernard Zell Anshe Emet Day School, an ISACs-accredited independent school in Chicago. In 2015, I became certified as an Exceptional Needs Specialist by the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards. After 14 winters in Chicago and the birth of my son, my husband and I decided to move “home” to Tampa, which brought me to Tampa Prep. I love helping students to maximize their potential, recognize their strengths and find success at school. I am also passionate about working with teachers, parents and students to develop a school culture that normalizes and celebrates differences in the way that people think and learn. In my free time, you’ll find me cooking, reading, going to the beach, traveling to Maine in the summer and my husband’s native Scotland, playing with my goofy son, Jasper, and our goofy dog, Wallace.

I chose teaching (which I always thought of as a noble profession but had not been originally interested in pursuing) for rather pragmatic reasons: it put me on about the same working schedule as my three children, who are now all adults. I enrolled in the University of South Florida to finish an undergraduate degree I had started 15 years earlier. I have since found that teaching offers these essential elements of a profession: important work that is fulfilling, challenging and creative.Certainly the young people, with their energy and potential, are the best part of teaching. I am challenged to help them learn the language of Math and its processes as essential parts that help them learn logical and critical thinking. Watching them be successful in aha moments in the classroom, in pursuit of further mathematical learning and in their chosen paths, is a great reward. It is my privilege to contribute to and be a part of the academic, social and personal lives of my students.Reading is both my pastime of choice and my first means for continued learning, and I enjoy all types of books from novels to data-rich analysis of current educational trends. I also enjoy the challenge of a new project, such as the Grady Grant I received to develop a package that would allow students to do a self-directed and self-paced review of Algebra I during the summer. Over the years, evolving technology has caught my interest (the graphing calculator many years ago, the SmartBoard a dozen years ago and the iPad recently) and offered processes to explore more effective teaching and learning. One thing has remained constant: with kindness, perseverance and dark chocolate, almost anything can be done.

Dakota Kuharich Stevenson {BA, MFA} is a performer, instructor, and creator in the Tampa Bay Area. Originally from Litchfield, CT, Dakota attended the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts where she spent her four years of high school as a Musical Theater Major studying acting, voice, and all styles of dance. Dakota is a graduate from the University of Tampa (BA-Applied Dance) and Jacksonville University (MFA-Choreography) where she was able to explore her passion for movement through performance, Brain Compatible Dance Education, and choreographic practice. She has been given multiple opportunities to choreograph and perform for the University of Tampa’s Dance and Theater Program, as well as locally in the Tampa Bay Area. Previously, Dakota was a Dancer/Choreographer/ Board Member for contemporary company, Moving Current Dance Collective (Tampa, FL), and Captain of the Tampa Bay Tornadoes Dance Team (AAL). I have been an athletic administrator for the past 15 years at the high school level. My passion has always been working with student-athletes and mentoring coaches. I was named the Athletic Director of the Year in New Hampshire in 2007 and in Osceola County in 2013, 2016 and 2017. I earned my Certified Master Athletic Administrator designation in 2005 and have held several leadership roles within the state of Florida including Representative Assembly and the Regional Appeals Committee.

Having been Director of Technology since 2009, I can honestly say that Tampa Preparatory School is the most innovative and creative school with which I have had the pleasure of being involved. My role is to align the school’s inspirational mission statement with every technological initiative. I see that mission statement being lived every day.Upon graduating from high school in Texas during the awesome years I enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a Russian linguist for four years. After leaving my role as Sgt. Lewis behind, I received my bachelor’s degree in Russian and German and later decided to start taking courses in Information Technology. After becoming a Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer, I worked for 14 years as Technology Director at various public/private educational institutions. To teach or not to teach? For me, that has never been the question! As a kid, I daydreamed about being a teacher and have always loved books. What could be better than putting those two passions together for a career? I have been an English teacher for over 15 years with all but two of those spent at Tampa Prep. I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English (with an emphasis on Writing) and a Master of Science degree in English Education at the secondary level from Florida State University. I completed an internship in Tallahassee and have taught all grade levels and abilities from 6th grade through 12th grade in both public and private schools. I discovered along the way that I love teaching English to middle schoolers! We get to study new vocabulary, refine grammar skills, improve on the mechanics and styles of writing and discover good literature all while still having lots of fun in the classroom.I am a member of the National Council of Teachers of English and was a former Tampa Prep Sigety Chair holder. I am the faculty advisor to Prep’s Student Leaders’ Club in the Middle School. I have coached various sports throughout the years and try to stay involved in student activities. The rapport amongst the teachers and between the teachers and students is invaluable, and I found the perfect place for me in Tampa Prep’s Middle School!

The best part of teaching theatre is watching students learn who they really are. Theatre celebrates individuality and diversity. It embraces every quirk and oddity of the human experience. By becoming other people, students have to see the world through others’ eyes, which builds their ability to empathize. Theatre is highly collaborative at the same time, encouraging students to put the team over themselves. At Prep, we emphasize project-based learning, so all theatre classes are oriented toward production of some kind: full-scale plays and musicals, end-of-class showcases, cabarets and more.My teaching experience includes four years as Head of Acting at Blake School of the Arts, four years as Instructor of Acting at USF School of Theatre and Dance, three years as Instructor of Acting at the Graduate and Undergraduate Theatre Departments at Florida Atlantic University and two years as Instructor of Acting at New World School of the Arts in Miami.I am a card-carrying member of Actors’ Equity, the Actors Union. Recent theatrical credits include the Emcee in Cabaret and Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof at Freefall Theatre in St Petersburg. Regionally, I have worked at The Old Globe Theatre in San Diego, Pasadena Playhouse in Los Angeles and many others. I earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts and an Master of Fine Arts degree from The Old Globe Theatre/University of San Diego. I live in Temple Terrace with my beautiful wife Amanda, son Dylan and daughter Evelyn.

My foray into education started in a variety of informal settings, dating back to my teenage years and included summer camp counselor, search and rescue instructor and educational programs at Sea World Orlando. While in a transitional stage in my early 20s, I had the opportunity to become a Science teacher at an alternative education school for juvenile offenders. It was tough, tiring, exciting and rewarding at the same time. In 2001, I made the switch to Tampa Prep, and I havenâ€™t looked back. Tampa Prep has allowed me to interact with students and help to provide them with a world-class education in a multitude of ways. From the Science classroom, to the lacrosse field and to the mountains of North Carolina, I have had the opportunity to not only teach, but to also learn and collaborate with students. Additionally, the opportunity to work with and collaborate with such a talented, intelligent and genuine faculty is beyond compare. It is fantastic being a part of the Tampa Prep family!

I am lucky enough to work alongside colleagues that inspire me to grow and students who continue to educate me here at Prep. Everyday I am thankful to have the opportunity to discuss literature and the human experience with my kids. I enjoy working with young people because they are creative, uninhibited, and colorful. I love reading and discussing texts from all over the world but my favorite area of study is American literature. I also enjoy assisting students with the writing process and helping them view themselves as writers. It is important to leave high school as a confident communicator. In college and in the real world, students will find writing to be a valuable tool. As a military brat I enjoy traveling and meeting new people. I always love to join in on travel experiences with my family and friends but also with students when possible. It is rewarding to show them new places, give them a chance to do community service, and partake in exciting adventures! Outside of school I love spending time with my family and friends. I also love to cook, play games, explore outdoors, and read! I have been teaching upper school English since 2011 in both the Tampa area and New York City. In addition to my role as an educator, I spend the Fall season coaching the varsity swim team. As a mother as of August 2017, I have become an even more well-rounded teacher. I do my best to see my students through the loving eyes of a parent as I would hope my daughter’s teachers will do.

Since graduating from Calvin College in 2000, I’ve had the opportunity to teach in public, private and international school settings. My journeys across the country and the world have only helped to solidify the belief that learning is a life-long journey. It’s my hope that all my students walk out of my classroom a little more prepared for the next leg of their journey. I knew that I wanted to teach at Tampa Prep after I read online that they were switching to one-to-one iPad technology. I have been an enthusiastic ambassador of technology in the classroom since the Internet boom in the ’90s when I was still living in Portugal. Utilizing iPads in the classroom embodies the three values that I promote to my students: structure, innovation and enthusiasm. Each day, I strive to create an environment in which students easily understand what we are working towards and what is expected while being enthusiastic and allowing them to express their enthusiasm as well. Outside of school, I really enjoy the Tampa Bay area fishing, beautiful beaches, amusement parks and relaxing lifestyle.

I was thrilled to join Tampa Prep as the Director of Development in January 2019. When my husband and I started to talk about finally leaving New England winters behind, we never imagined we would find a city, school, and community that would fit our family so well. The vibrancy and warmth of both Tampa and Tampa Prep is palpable and energizing. Professionally, I have been doing development in schools and social service organizations for 20 years. I am proud of the dollars I have helped to raise and also of the relationships I have built throughout my career with parents, alumni, volunteers, donors, and colleagues. I am lucky to have an incredible group of professionals in the development office. As a team, we are dedicated to engaging, informing, and fostering strong relationships with parents, alumni, parents of alumni, grandparents, and other friends. Some of the ways we do this include: organizing volunteer efforts; planning events, both large and small; communicating with past, present, and future Tampa Prep families; raising awareness of the School, its programs and people through social media and the website, and raising funds to ensure that the School continues to be a special place long into the future. Kevin became the seventh Head of Tampa Preparatory School in July 2007. Kevin’s roots go deeply into the Tampa community where he serves on the Executive Steering Committee of the Friends of the Riverwalk, Executive Advisory Council for MUMA College of Business at USF, Chairman of the Tampa Downtown Partnership, Moffitt Hospital Board of Directors, the Creative Tampa Bay Board and has been a trustee for the George Steinbrenner Boys and Girls Club. Kevin also proudly serves as Vice President of the Florida Council of Independent Schools, is a member of Bay Area Association of Independent Schools, and served as President of B.A.A.I.S. (2009-2010). He is a 1989 graduate of Colby College where he was named a Lacrosse All-American. I believe I make a good teacher because I have always been a teacher on some level. In high school, I was part of a science club, giving test-taking tutorials to freshmen and sophomores. In college, I tutored both mathematics and chemistry. Through it all, I learned how to become a better teacher.After my graduate degree, my first job was with Proctor and Gamble in Cincinnati, Ohio as a financial analyst. After Proctor and Gamble, I worked at a paper making plant in Georgia where I decided that in the long run, financial accounting was not for me. However, I did pick up some computer skills in the process and decided to leverage that and go back to USF for computer engineering classes. I subsequently left and took jobs with First Florida Bank, then IKON Office Solutions as Director of Software Development and finally with a capital management company in Clearwater. Though my background has an emphasis on software, I never really lost interest in teaching and I believe that I bring my industry experience into the classroom.I have a strong belief that robotics tournaments of any kind teach kids to become better problem solvers and better team players. After all, what better way to bond than to work together with peers on a particularly thorny problem and eventually make it work? I hope to impart that kind of persistence and experience to all students in the Robotics Club.I am proud of the following Awards and Experiences:

I have an insatiable passion for exercise and sports. I have been fortunate enough to be able to share that enthusiasm with the students at Tampa Prep since 1998. Helping students maximize their potential through physical activity has been extremely rewarding for me. I feel great pride when I see my students improving. Whether they are shaving strokes off their handicap or adding inches to their vertical, to me, the true joy in coaching and teaching is seeing the progress my students make through hard work and dedication. At Tampa Prep, I have many duties and responsibilities. First and foremost, I feel it is my job to try and create a safe, fun learning environment where each student feels consequential. I teach Physical Education, Health, and Athletic Conditioning and am the Director of Golf Operations. I also coach the Middle School Wrestling team. Another important duty of mine is serving on the Conduct Review Board. I consider it an honor to work with the amazing students, faculty, administrators and parents at such an outstanding school! I am a proud husband and father of three young beautiful children, who are the joy of my life! In my free time I enjoy racquetball, golf, table tennis, weight training and jogging. My wife and I also enjoy dining out at different ethnic restaurants around the Tampa Bay area.

My mother, grandmother and aunt were all teachers (in Hillsborough County), so it makes sense that I would end up working in education. I especially love getting to be in the library because it affords me the opportunity to build relationships with ALL our Tampa Prep students. I am a firm believer that libraries should be places where students can discover, innovate, collaborate, create and grow. I previously worked at Stewart Middle Magnet School for seven years and piloted their library makerspace program, where students could learn more about Science Technology Engineering Arts and Math (STEAM) through a variety of hands-on activities. My memberships include the Florida Association for Media in Education, the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). I’ve received the ISTE Outstanding Young Educator Award (2016), the AASL Frances Henne Award (2015) for emerging leaders in school libraries and the School Library Journal Build Something Bold Award (2015). I present at conferences and lead professional development workshops internationally on libraries and makerspaces. I served on the Sunshine State Young Readers Award committee from 2012-2015. I blog about libraries, education and makerspaces at RenovatedLearning.com and I am also a monthly contributor to AASL Knowledge Quest. I am the proud author of two books: Challenge-Based Learning in the School Library Makerspace and Reimagining Library Spaces: Transform Your Space on Any Budget.

As a college student at Emory, I volunteered in the admission office, giving tours and greeting prospective students. After graduating with a Masters in Accounting, I spent a couple of years as a public accountant with Deloitte in Nashville. I moved home to Tampa in 1999 and decided to go back to what I enjoyed most, working with students as they find their next educational path. I started at Tampa Prep in 2002 as Director of Financial Aid and Associate Director of Admissions. After taking a few years off to start our family, I returned to Tampa Prep in 2010 to work in the college counseling office. I believe that the college search can be fun and does not have to be stressful. My goal is for students to learn about themselves throughout the process and not get overwhelmed. Tampa Prep does such an amazing job preparing our students for college and beyond. My husband Bryan and I have two daughters Paige ’22 and Payton ’24. We are avid sports fans and love to support our Tampa professional teams as well as our Terrapin teams. When not at school, we enjoy being outside and spending time with family.

I absolutely love working at Tampa Prep. I’ve been here since 2004! I wake up each morning excited to start my day and am eager to see what is in store for me. My job comes with numerous tasks and duties but there is one in particular I have connected with. I am the head of the Wellness Committee for the faculty and staff. Promoting health and wellness allows me to have fun and be creative. It is rewarding to help influence healthy behaviors and habits. My goal is to help bring a little extra happiness to each member of our faculty and staff. Happiness and smiles are contagious, and it is incredible to watch teachers carry it into their classrooms. In my free time I enjoy training for long distance running, reading a good book, and spending time with my family. We can usually be found at the ballpark, on the beach, on the boat or at the pool.

After moving to Miami from Peru during my high school years, I attended the University of Central Florida where some of my professors had a profound effect on me. Ever since then, I knew that I wanted to be a teacher. Afterward, I had the opportunity to study in Spain and to receive my Masters degree from the University of Salamanca. Being able to create a safe yet challenging place for students to explore language and culture has been my biggest concern as a teacher. I enjoy coming to work everyday and be able to share my personal experiences about other countries and traditions. I have been teaching Spanish for over 16 years and every year I feel like I’m learning more. Knowledge that I love to pass on to my students. Tampa Prep has allowed me to implement new pedagogical strategies in the classroom that I wouldn’t have been able to implement at other schools, which have allowed me to grow as a person and as a teacher. I feel very lucky to have found a school like Prep.

At the age of five, while on a field trip, I heard Spanish spoken for the very first time and I was hooked! I knew that day that I would become a Spanish teacher. I attended the University of New Hampshire, spent my junior year in Granada, Spain and after graduation, started my Master’s degree at the Universidad de Salamanca. In 1994, I received my Master’s degree in Spanish Literature, Spanish Linguistics and the Methodologies of Teaching Foreign Language and dove into teaching middle school, high school and college level classes.Learning Spanish as an English speaker has provided me with a unique perspective on second language acquisition. I want all of my students to know that I genuinely care about their success and I will enthusiastically support and encourage them to ask questions, take risks and discover all they can about the language and culture of the Spanish speaking world. I fully believe that Learning another language means never being worlds apart.I have lived in Tampa for many years now, but I am a New Englander at heart…Go Red Sox! I enjoy being outdoors, fishing, eating great food (mostly chocolate) and spending time with my two boys, Ben and Henry.

Tim brings an amazing energy and enthusiasm to our athletic department. He is looking forward to “promoting positivity and program engagement,” and to “developing creative ideas and solutions to complex issues.” Tim has a wealth of experience and comes to us from Notre Dame Prep in Arizona where he served as the Associate Athletic Director for the last two years where he reorganized and redesigned the school’s athletic website, social media accounts and digital content. In addition, Tim taught digital photography, graphic design and U.S. History. He also has a kindness and care about him that is infectious, and these characteristics lend themselves to his overall interpersonal skills. Tim received his Master’s of Sports Administration from Ohio University and received his Bachelor of Arts in Secondary Education: Social Studies from the University of Pittsburgh.

Having experienced the benefits of an independent school as a student firsthand, I have developed an appreciation for institutions like Tampa Preparatory School. Attending St. Patrick’s Catholic School molded me into the person I am today in nearly every aspect: academically, emotionally and socially. The independent school education I received allowed me to succeed in high school and eventually receive a full scholarship to attend the University of South Florida. I graduated from USF in 2013 and received degrees in Classics- Latin/Ancient Greek and History, with focuses in Latin and Ancient History. My senior research included projecting modern psycho-analytics onto the entire works of the Latin poet Catullus, and an in-depth analysis of the sources and history of Severan Rome. I am an avid bowler and can be found spending my free time at the various bowling alleys around Tampa. Though I may have had my greatest success in bowling, my true love is and always will be ice hockey. I dreamt of being on the Tampa Bay Lightning as a child and have gone to countless games in the past. Lastly, I enjoy gaming, travel, soccer and at leisure partaking in my journey to teach myself the Russian language.

Derek comes to Prep from the Pomfret School in CT. Derek’s career to date falls deeply into the camp of “triple threat,” as a teacher, coach and jack of all trades at a school. At a previous stop he created the school’s maker space, and at all stops, he has been an exemplary teacher and coach. Derek has also presented at a number of conferences, thus he will be a welcome colleague joining the ranks of presenters already at Prep. His teaching philosophy “centers around how important I believe it is to engage my students in ways that motivate them, that keep them on the edge of their comfort level and that encourage them to take ownership of their learning.” That sounds incredibly familiar to all Prep teachers as they are values deeply held across our institution. Derek’s skillset and teaching experiences are a welcome addition to our Science department. Derek received his Master of Science in Forensic Science from Arcadia University and his Bachelor of Science (Physics Major) from Allegheny College.

From the earliest age that I can remember I have had one true love: sports. At age three, I would plead with my mom to change the television from Sesame Street to SportsCenter. Growing up in upstate New York, my dream was always to be the next Chris Berman or Stuart Scott, coming up with great sayings like Booyah! As I got into high school and realized that being the next great SportsCenter anchor might be more of a pipe dream, I changed my focus and dream to be an Athletic Director. After graduating from high school, I ended up in the Sunshine State at the University of Tampa where I earned a Bachelor of Science in Sports Management. In college I was a member of the golf team and worked in the Sports Information Office. Going to a small school gave me a great opportunity to work and experience things in a collegiate Athletic department that I otherwise would not have been able to.My senior year I was given a chance to intern at Tampa Prep in the Athletic department, and they have not been able to get rid of me since. Tampa Prep is like no school I have ever been at, the caring support for the students shown by the faculty, staff and coaches is unprecedented. Tampa Prep has given me a chance to fulfill a dream that only a couple of years ago didn’t seem possible.

After graduation from the University of Florida with a degree in Business Administration, I joined the world of retail as a fashion buyer. The skills and traits I needed to succeed weren’t associated with the glamorous descriptions of fashion buying, but instead, strong analytical skills, a working knowledge of computers and the ability to work under pressure. After 13 years in the industry, traveling to NYC and various trade shows, I decided to retire to spend time with my young family. Twelve years later in 2011, after working in Admissions and Development at St. John’s Episcopal School for two years, I found the perfect position as an Administrative Assistant to the Director of the Middle School, in an independent school environment surrounded by students, parents, faculty and staff. From data entry to event planning, I’ve done it all. The skills I’ve acquired through my education, work experience and volunteer hours have equipped me to meet a diverse array of responsibilities and my days are never dull. In addition, I am the buyer for the campus store! I am blessed to have my three children, Jimmy (Class of ’15), Emily (Class of ’16) and Lili (Class of ’21), attend Tampa Prep. Go Red, Go Gold, Go Prep.

I have been a certified Athletic Trainer for more than 15 years. After receiving my degree in Athletic Training from Catawba College, I completed a one-year internship at Appalachian State University where I was the Head Athletic Trainer for both the Men’s Soccer and Baseball teams. While working on my master’s degree in Exercise Science, I served as a Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer at USF where I was the Head Athletic Trainer for the Men’s Soccer Team. I have been an Athletic Trainer and Faculty member at Tampa Prep since 2009. I teach Health, Personal Fitness and Emergency Medical Response.

As a six-year Tampa Prep Terrapin, I understand how Tampa Prep prepares students for the journey and the challenges that college and life have in store for its students. My love for Tampa Prep and what it has done for me brought me back as an employee of Tampa Prep Summer Programs for the past nine years, to sit on the Alumni Board at Prep and, eventually, to the position of Prep’s Assistant Director of Admissions.

I am actively involved in the Tampa Bay community, through volunteer efforts and leadership positions through the Junior League of Tampa.

As a lifelong product of independent schooling from Kindergarten through high school I have been, and always will be, a person who strives to create and recruit students with high morals and values.

My husband and I recently had our first child, the newest little Terrapin in our family!

I graduated from Tampa Prep in 1995 and attended the University of Tampa where I earned a Bachelors of Science degree in International Business. While there, I also played volleyball for the Spartans. I taught for eight years at Plant High School in the Business Education department. While at Plant I was the head volleyball coach and won five state championships. I went on and coached Division 2 college volleyball for five years in New York City at Queens College – CUNY. While at QC I worked directly with high risk student athletes and ensured their post graduation success. In 2017 I returned to my alma mater, Tampa Prep, as the head varsity volleyball coach and director of volleyball operations. I have three children. My son is a chemical engineering major at the University of South Florida and one of my daughters is pursuing nursing at Florida International University. My youngest daughter is a student at Tampa Prep. I enjoy biking the riverwalk and spending time with my family.

I graduated from USF with a Bachelors degree in Athletic Training and a Masters degree in Medical Sciences. At Tampa Preparatory school I not only serve as an Athletic Trainer, but also as a Physical Education teacher. I love working with kids! In my spare time I like to run, spend time with friends and family, and play around with my dog. I also play soccer one night a week with an organization called Tampa Bay Club Sports. I played soccer for 12 years during my childhood. In my free time I enjoy walking around the city of Saint Petersburg because there always seems to be something going on. I have lived in this city my entire life and I love it dearly.

Mike comes to Prep after eight years of service in a variety of roles at the Nichols School in Buffalo, most recently as the Director of College Counseling. Mike has also been a PGA Teaching Professional, and is a retired professional hockey player. A man of many diverse talents, Mike is most looking forward to connecting with the student, and the Tampa Prep community as our students begin their transition to the next phase of their lives. Mike is kind, soft spoken, and eager to support our students. As a fourth-generation Tampa native I was fortunate to call Tampa Prep my high school home. After graduating in 1992, I attended Auburn University to pursue a career in aviation. After following the twists and turns on the road of life, I graduated in 1998 with a pilot’s license and a degree in Political Science and returned to Tampa in to begin a 19-year stretch as a Financial Advisor. I married the love of my life in 2005 and was blessed to become a dad to my son in 2009 and my daughter in 2013. In 2017, I ventured into non-profit fundraising as the Director of Development and Major Gifts Officer for the National Pediatric Cancer Foundation. It was there that I earned my CFRE designation. In the summer of 2021, I was offered the amazing opportunity to join the Development team at Tampa Prep. I am so excited to be back home and have the opportunity to lend a hand in elevating our school to new heights!

I like to think that my life has gone full circle. My passion for journalism began in a high school classroom as a staff writer for the student newspaper. Flash forward to present day, and here I am, advising two student publications here at Tampa Prep. I began my teaching career right after graduating from Florida State University in 2015. I worked with Hillsborough County Public Schools and taught English as well as advising the student newspaper at my high school. I found myself in the Tampa Prep family in 2018 and I couldn’t be happier. It is refreshing to be a part of a community that values hard work and determination, all while celebrating the individuality of the students and staff. I am a fourth generation Tampa Native and live in the “up-and-coming” Seminole Heights area. In my free time, you can find me spending time with my family, enjoying a new restaurant in town, or playing with my dog- a redbone coonhound named Doak.

Weston Zloty attended The University of Tampa and graduated in the summer of 2021 with his bachelor’s in science, with a heavy research component that included statistics. Throughout his undergraduate career, he gravitated toward data analysis and business, which is why he is currently getting his MBA from Saint Leo in Data Analysis and is set to graduate this Summer in 2023. This year marks the beginning of my 9th year working at Tampa Prep, and with that comes some new and exciting changes! After 8 years as the school Health Coordinator, I’ve joined the Admissions team as the Assistant to the Director of Admissions. I’m excited to share the story of Tampa Prep with our prospective and new families and to help them become a part of this amazing community!

New York born and bred, I am the daughter of two middle school teachers. (I was the kid who KNEW that teachers didn’t live at school!) As a child, my career aspirations always gravitated towards education. I was extremely lucky, as I was able to spend almost 20 years as a stay-at-home mom to my two kids. During those years, I had some fabulous opportunities, including working part-time as a substitute teacher and camp counselor/director, and volunteering as a PTA mom, Sunday School teacher and Girl Scout leader. Working with children and watching them learn and grow has brought me such joy!

My children are all graduates of Tampa Prep! My daughter Carrie is a member of the Class of 2012, and my son Tim and his wife Alexa are members of the Class of 2014. My husband Ted served on the Board of Trustees from 2012 to 2018. Our family recognizes the importance of giving back to the school that has given us so much, and we continue to support Tampa Prep in as many ways as we can. We are all Terrapins, through and through!
